(POEM) Belly by Zelda Bean

Belly

In utero-

I was passing the time kicking

mama’s insides

like…

where have I ever been?

This is the only place.

I remember the belly vividly-

like I recall that quinceañera

where I got drunk

off one glass of wine.

I stole the DJ’s microphone

and sang

Muchacha Sucia,

Muchacha Sucia.

She’s a dirty girl,

She’s a dirty girl.

I got that from MTV’s Rob Dyrdek.

The birthday girl

was red in the cheeks.

It was the only Spanish I knew.

There was a drag queen there.

Not in the belly.

At the quinceañera .

I wish there were a drag queen

in the belly.

I was lonely there

despite being within somebody.

High kicks are better in a chorus line.

A lightless sanctuary

and then I was born.

I am now adult

and mean

like an ice cream truck

without proper permits.

Passing the time like

where have I ever been?

This is not the only place.
