(POEM) Biblical Poems by Zelda Bean

Garden of Eden

The flowers were

fleeting, ephemeral.

The most artistic project

ever attended to by God.

You can’t have an Adam and Eve

without a garden.

Flowers shine.

They were the main event.

The plants couldn’t have been

any better

and all we remember

is Adam and Eve

being assholes.

God littered when put mankind here.

Adam to Eve

You were my hero.

I hope you know that.

I know you think I was the hero,

but look at you.

Look at what you’re doing.

You’re as hot as the fiery volcano

we were born beneath.

God made you love me.

I annoyed you.

I was in love with you

from the moment I saw you.

God made us together.

I did not come first.

All of of our races you came first in,

because you sprinted like a beauty

who never had feet before.

God laughed at the way

you ran

because you looked

like a beautiful ray of sunshine—

holding hope in your fingertips.

You are beautiful as the apple

you bit into and shared with me.

You ate the core.

Eve to Adam

I don’t remember the beginning that well.

What a blur.

I forgot God made us together.

So does everybody else.

I thought you were the hero of the story.

I thought I wouldn’t exist without you.

I thought He made you and you said,

“Hey, take the worst parts of me

and put them together

and make a shitbag person

who eats apples

from trees that are forbidden.”

I have a relationship with misery,

but you erase all the pain

with your understanding eye contact.

Those relaxing eyes.

And so we leave today for the real world.

I feel a pain in my rib.

Let’s breathe in air—

the air that God once breathed

into our nostrils.

It was paradise to be with you in paradise.

It’ll be paradise to be with you in the real world.

God to Eve and Adam

So you two think I created you.

What you two rascals don’t understand

is that I created myself

by creating you two.

Stay standing.
