(Artistic Essay) The Rest is Drag

I wish I had my favorite photo from my high school photo class. We had to do family photo shoots. Nobody wanted to be a part of this. My dad would have loved to be photographed, but he was probably working long hours. I went to the drama room and raided the costume area. I found a pixie cut wig. This was me being a female ancestor.

I did the same with a man’s wig, but I lost the photo. I’ll post it as soon as I find it.

I love costumes. I’m an October baby, and my birthday always fell during spirit week in high school. My mom also threw me a couple of costume-themed parties. I was very Cindy Sherman here with this photoshoot.

I just love drag. The make-up! The hair! Getting to transform like that. The strange thing is I HATE wearing make-up for daily wear. It takes forever to apply, and I just end up sleeping in it anyway. But to get onstage and look that beautiful, Larger than life. I’d dare to put pigment on my face so I could be a drag queen. As long as somebody else does all the work.

This collage was started bizarrely. I was working on my index cards and in my sketchbook and I spilled my water all over. The sketchbook was fine because it was mixed media paper. It’s designed to take water. The index cards didn’t fare as well. I took everything to Donna Lexa Art Centers and started what would become this collage. On a big piece of cardboard. I lined the index cards on the top and bottom and down the middle. I put a drag king on one side and a drag queen on the other. I used the rest of my sketchbook and planted the shards symmetrically. I was going to add a red border on the top and bottom, but decided against it.

I’m really pumped about how this turned out. A person at the studio said it’s not as me because there is limited color, but I like a good departure.
