Work in Progress: Squeegee Art at Donna Lexa Art Centers

I started a big painting some time last week! The fall is flying by. I started with a squeegee underpainting at the studio, Donna Lexa Art Centers. I let it sit until Monday.

I just felt like it wasn’t ready when I got there on Monday. We had a new man working as a volunteer or intern. I showed him my process for squeegee art. He was amazed.

Today, I got to DLAC and pulled the vine charcoal out and attacked it. I knew I was flailing to get it to look like the reference, which is a photo of Billie Holiday from the Library of Congress archive. I ended up giving her a bird nose.

I don’t think that I loved it at first, but once I added the dark lines, I got it. I suddenly saw the feminist importance of this work. What it represents from my personal life.

I got home and started adding paint pens. I’m not sure about my color choices, but it looks like it’s pulsating.

When it’s done, I’m probably going to let the title do most of the talking.

It’s not done yet, folks.

Stay tuned.
