(Artist Essay) Jeannetta The Alien- You Have A Universe In Your Head

And so I was holding court on the hammock at the eating disorder facility. Not with humans, but voices. They weren’t human themselves. They were SUPER human. They all exist in a group like Marvel or DC. It fits because my first ever tattoo says EXCELSIOR on my wrist, Stan Lee’s motto. I’m not a super fan by any means. I kept seeing it on my wrist while in AmeriCorps NCCC, if I remember correctly. I thought it was for Silver Linings Playbook, since I am bipolar and will forever have that as my first diagnosis. A college student at the CVS asked me if I go to a lot of conventions. That was how I found out about Stan Lee. When I got a bit older, I got really into superheroes to help me with my mental health. I was going to write a book about mentally ill superheroes. Do I keep up with Marvel or DC? Not enough. I just fondly remember watching Gaurdians of the Galaxy at the mental hospital.

Jeanetta is an alien being from the planet called June. She goes with Steven Potawatomi, who you will meet at some point. He’s a famous actor on a fictional show called Team Orange- a show about firefighters. One night, while I was in Fairhaven’s bathtub, she came to me and said, “You have a universe in your head. Write about it.”

It’s almost the best thing I have ever heard from a voice, only it would have been better if she had said make art. Well, actually, I guess she is right. Writing about the voices on this blog really helps. Art is just my favorite way to show people what I went through.
