Meet Fifi Fuentes, or Silver Girl! A superhero who voice can change people’s state of being. I used to believe I had Dissociative Identity Disorder, as I explained in my story about Scary Mary. Fifi was originally a fake alter- Ophelia. I thought I was her. I posted a poem a while back called French. It was about a real experience at the local cafe with my friend. I was deeply schizophrenic that day. I told him I thought I was texting his best friend, but I was really getting texts from someone else. I heard a voice in my head repeat the following phrase. “I want to draw you like one of my French girls.”
I started talking in a French accent. We walked out of the cafe and to his car as it drizzled. I think we were linking arms, but I can’t remember. I got in the car and told him about Ophelia and all the alter bullshit. We are friends to this day.
Fifi is a total beeyotch in my first draft of the novel I was writing, but she is cool in the end.
I think she came to me when my mom had breast cancer. I would rewatch Kristi Yamaguchi ice skating over and over again. The song was “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel. I would feel so alive when he sang, “Sail on, Silver Girl. Sail on by. Your time has come to shine. All your dreams are on their way.”
So alive.
That’s how I felt at the gallery show. I had a moment as I headed out. I can’t describe it. I was experiencing exhilaration, and as it happened, a worker smiled at me, understanding and looking proud. Thank you to everybody at the Carnelian Gallery and Arts for All WI. Y’all made my dreams come true.
